ELCA Churchwide Assembly Comes to Phoenix

From July 28 to August 2, 2025, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will gather in Phoenix, Arizona, for its Churchwide Assembly—a significant event that will shape the future of our denomination. Hosted by the Grand Canyon Synod, this assembly will bring together 845 voting members under the theme “For the Life of the World.”

Key actions at this year’s assembly include:

  • Electing a new Presiding Bishop and Secretary, decisions that will guide the ELCA’s direction for years to come.

  • Voting on the proposed Faith and Civic Life social statement.

  • Addressing memorials focused on missing and murdered Indigenous women and dismantling racism

The assembly will also feature:

  • Daily worship and theological reflection.

  • A candlelight AMMPARO vigil.

  • An exhibition powwow hosted by Indigenous leaders from the Phoenix area

Bishop Deborah Hutterer of the Grand Canyon Synod invites all of us to pray, learn, and volunteer as we welcome nearly 1,000 participants from across the ELCA. She emphasizes that this moment is not just about church governance—it’s about faithful community, justice, and hope

If you're interested in volunteering or learning more about the assembly, visit the Grand Canyon Synod website.

Let us hold this gathering in prayer and remain open to the Spirit’s movement as our church discerns its future.
