A Letter from Pastor Beth

Dear People of the Journey,

After nearly four and a half joyful years with New Journey Lutheran Church, I write to share that God is calling me into a new adventure. I have accepted the position of Campus Pastor at California Lutheran University, and our family will be relocating to Thousand Oaks, California. My final Sunday will be August 17.

This decision is both sorrowful and faithful. It is sorrowful because this beloved community has been where I learned to be a pastor—and you have been such a joy to love. Through the years, I have been shaped by your gentleness and kindness, your stories and your trust, your deep compassion and generous faith. I have seen Christ’s love in action through you—in your service to neighbors near and far, and in your bold witness for a more just and loving world.

At the same time, this decision is faithful. I feel called and gifted by the Spirit to accompany young adults as they explore their faith and vocation, preparing to step into the world with courage and purpose. I return to my alma mater, a place that deeply shaped my own call to ministry—including my call to serve here with you. This next step fills me with both excitement and holy fear, as all good adventures do.

It is simply time for me to bless and release the part of the journey we have shared.

New Journey, by God’s grace, you have built something beautiful here. You have nurtured authentic and tender fellowship, welcomed all people, responded generously to the world’s needs, and allowed the Spirit to continually stretch and lead you. Long before I arrived, you were living your call—and you are well equipped to continue.

You have a dedicated council and gifted lay leaders, each serving with courage, vision, and servant hearts. The Grand Canyon Synod will walk with you during this transition. The ongoing discernment around your location and lease need not pause—your faithful work continues. You are ready, and Christ is already going ahead of you.

Jesus said: ”Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me." —John 14:1

In the time we have left, I look forward to worshiping, singing, sharing stories, and sipping coffee—or something stronger—at Phil’s. Further transition details will unfold in due time. The way forward will emerge, as it always does.

With all my love in Christ, Pastor Beth
