Synod Alert: Protect Yourself from AI Voice Scams

A rostered minister in our synod recently faced a frightening scam involving an AI-generated voice that mimicked a loved one in distress. The caller claimed to have abducted their spouse and demanded money. Thankfully, the call was fraudulent, but the experience was deeply traumatic.

These “virtual kidnapping” scams are on the rise and often target clergy and nonprofit leaders. Here’s how to stay safe:

Pause and verify – Hang up and contact your loved one directly.
Never send money or gift cards – Legitimate agencies don’t demand payment by phone.
Report immediately – Contact local law enforcement and the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Limit personal info online – Reduce voice and personal content shared publicly.
Inform your congregation – Share scam awareness tips in newsletters and announcements.

Let’s stay alert and support one another. Technology can imitate compassion—but never replace it.
